Cenozoic Era
Important Details:
The Cenozoic Era also known as; “Recent Life” or, “Age Of Mammals” started 65 million years ago and continues on to present day. It includes three smaller periods: Paleogene, Neogene, and Quaternary the period we are living in. The climate in this era was constantly changing each period. The Paleogene Period’s climate was very tropical. But during the Neogene Period the earth had cooled down. Which then continued on to the Quaternary Period. The beginning of the era was much warmer than it is today. The global warming period (55.8 million years ago) was followed by a long dry, and cool period. The climate was not the only thing changing, continents continued to drift apart. During the Paleogene Period the continents broke apart with much force, then causing oceans. After a while continents moved to their original positions; Antarctica moved down to the South Pole, South America slowly attached itself to North America. When North America was separating from Europe in the process the Atlantic Ocean grew. In the process India collided with Asia with so much power it formed mountains known as the Himalayans. The Great Lakes formed as glaciers and the Alps, Himalayas, and Rocky Mountains also formed.
Life and Extinction:
The Cenozoic Period had many changes to living things. Marine life, for example, was changed a lot, when the continents moved apart creating oceans. When different animals became extinct smaller animals multiplied. Later in the era, rodents, small horses, rhinos, and elephants appeared. Grasses also appeared and they began to spread out along the plains, and savannas. Grass was also one of the most common plant life, other common common plant life included: pine, mosses, and oaks.
Interesting Facts:
The Paleogene Period started 65 million years ago and ended 23 million years ago. The Neogene Period started 23 million years ago and ended 2.6 million years ago. The Quaternary Period, as said before, is currently the period you and I are living in, started 2.6 million years ago and continues to present day. Since the Quaternary Period hasn’t ended yet, the Cenozoic Era hasn’t ended either. It might end tomorrow or 5 million years from now, I guess scientists are just waiting for a big change to happen.
